Name: Marissa Sanders-Young
Where do you live? I live in the South End area of Montclair. I moved to this side of town after I married my husband back in 2016. We both grew up here in Montclair and have lived here for the majority of our lives.
How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?
I make my living as a professional chef. I absolutely love to cook and to share my love through cooking for people. After working in restaurant and corporate kitchens for more than a decade, one of my closest friends Justin (also from Montclair) and I started our own business. Brown Butter Kitchen was born during the pandemic. It started out with us doing a few dinners for friends when we realized we could – as they say – “find a need and fill it.” People were sick of cooking, wanted a special experience, and still wanted to gather with small groups of friends. In the fall of 2020 it was hard to get a reservation as everything reopened, and many people just felt more comfortable being at home rather than in public. We create an experience for our clients from private chef prepared 4 course dinners served at your dining table, to family style brunches & dinners, to catering – we love getting to bring joy with our food.
Outside of cooking I really love flowers, they are just so beautiful. I enjoy getting the individual bunches and creating my own arrangement to display in our living room. Fun fact: my mom, aunt, and I made all of the centerpieces, bouquets, and boutonnieres for my wedding.
Coffee, tea or … ?
I honestly love both. Coffee for me is more of my morning/afternoon drink and I love a nice cup of tea in the evening. Relaxing with my daughter with a cup of tea in hand is always special. My husband makes a mean old fashioned so those are a special treat once we’ve gotten our daughter to bed.
What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day?
My idea of a perfect weekend day would be sleeping in then having brunch with my family and then cuddling on the couch watching movies all day – OR shopping! My 3-year-old daughter loves to go out on errands with me and shopping with her is always fun. She makes friends everywhere we go and always has my husband and I cracking up laughing.
What’s your favorite local restaurant?
This is SO hard. It really depends on what I’m going for. I absolutely love Salute on Glenridge Avenue. We’ve spent many anniversaries and my most recent birthday there. When in the mood for oysters and a more upscale vibe, Halcyon is one of my faves. Blue Steel Pizza Co. in Bloomfield has been one of our go-to spots over the last year.
What’s on your nightstand?
My phone and apple watch charger, a stack of books I intend on reading, a journal, and my old iPad which I use to play soothing music for us at night.
What are you listening to?
Lately in the car I’ve been listening to Destiny’s Child, Christina Aguilera, and Mariah Carey. No audio books at the moment. At home, just about every Disney movie plays throughout the week, and I’m always randomly singing the songs. The life of a parent, right?
What are your current indulgences?
I started watching “Little Fires Everywhere” on hulu a few nights ago, and I am hooked! Also lamb chops. After making them for a client dinner in December, I’ve just found myself craving them out of the blue. So good.
What talent would you most like to have?
I always wished I could really sing. As a kid my brother recorded me singing once, and I was mortified. I like to have my own concerts when I’m alone in my car. LOL.
What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about Montclair?
I’m not sure if this is a secret, but I went years not knowing about Trend Coffee & Tea House. When I was pregnant I walked in one day instead of going to DD and had the most delicious chai tea latte.
What do you hope they say about you at your funeral?
I hope they say that I loved on people, that I made a positive impact on people’s lives, and that I made a difference.
