Name: Rey Arvelo

Where do you live? Bloomfield, NJ

When did you move there? I would say 10 years ago.

Where did you grow up? Newark, NJ

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?  I work for the Newark Museum of Art as the Scheduling Coordinator. I also enjoy volunteering at the West Orange Art Center, curating, exhibiting, installing and creating my art. See some of my art at ReyArvelo.com or on Instagram.

Coffee, tea or … ?  Definitely coffee, been drinking it since I was 7. I own 2 coffee machines, various French presses, a Bialetti, a Nespresso and a Keurig. I prefer a dark roast. So yeah, coffee.

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? In the winter, painting or doing something constructive like chores. Spring Summer Fall, I like to be outdoors, fishing, hiking, camping and street festivals.

What’s your favorite local restaurant? Luna Wood Fire Tavern in Nutley. Great dishes, good pizza!

What’s on your nightstand? Picture of my wife and my cell phone.

What are you listening to? Depends what I’m doing. When I’m painting I love to listen to Jose Gonzalez, or some Latin Jazz. If I’m working at the Museum I play some alternative rock or some heavy metal. If I’m cleaning, some Salsa music.

What are your current indulgences? Cuban or Puerto Rican pastries, with coffee! Taylor ham, egg, cheese on a roll, with coffee!

What talent you would most like to have? I would love to play the guitar.

What’s the worst-kept (or best-kept!) secret about your town? Worst – I would say Parking in Bloomfield can be tough. Best – The diversity in Bloomfield. I love to see a variety of mom and pop stores and eateries. Food brings people together.

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral? That they will remember the good times.
