Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller Endorses Congressman Payne

NEWARK, NJ – U.S. Representative Donald M. Payne, Jr., (D-Newark) announced Tuesday the endorsement of Montclair Mayor Sean Spiller.

“Donald Payne is a progressive leader Democrats can count on,” said Mayor Spiller. “Congressman Payne has been a stalwart advocate for so many critical issues, including casting key votes to pass the American Rescue plan, preserve access to affordable health care and protect voting rights. When our Democracy was under attack, Congressman Payne stood up and twice voted to impeach Donald Trump. Along with Congresswoman Mikie Sherrill, Montclair is fortunate to have such strong representation in Washington.”

“Montclair is one of New Jersey’s most progressive and forward-thinking communities and I’m proud to have the endorsement of Mayor Spiller,” said Congressman Payne. “I’m committed to representing the interests of all of my constituents, and that’s why I will continue to deliver quality job opportunities, better access to affordable health care, more resources for local law enforcement, and so much more.”

Spiller, in his role as president of the NJEA had already endorsed Congressman Payne on behalf of that organization.

Congressman Payne has recently been endorsed by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, New Jersey Education Association, the Communications Workers of America NJ, Laborers’ International North America Eastern Region, the New Jersey Firefighters Mutual Benevolent Association and AFSCME NJ. He also recently announced the support of U.S. Senators Bob Menendez and Cory Booker as well as Governor Phil Murphy, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka and Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop.

Payne is facing a challenge by long time political organizer and pro-democracy activistImani Oakley.
