Baristanet Profile: Charlie Spademan

Name: Charlie Spademan

Where do you live? Montclair’s South End, near the Business District. Things are happening here!

When did you move there? I’ve lived in Montclair since 1995, in this house for a dozen+ years.

Where did you grow up? I was born and spent my early years in Detroit and went to school in Cleveland, but feel my “growing up” took place in the East Village in the late 70’s.

How do you make a living? OR What is your everyday passion?

My living AND my passion!

I am an artist. You can find me on Instagram @CharlieSpademan.  I have supported myself all of my life working with my hands and mind on creative endeavors, and feel like the line between art and craft is often pretty blurry.  My forged iron railings and doors at Bangz Salon are a good example; Utilitarian, but artwork of a kind.  My focus now is primarily on sculpture, though I paint and work with a camera as well. One of my large photographic works will be up for auction on December 9th at Art Uncorked, a fundraiser for Montclair Art Museum.

I also am hosting a performance of Phil Kline’s Unsilent Night for the second year in Montclair on December 21st  at 6:30.  We will gather at the Seymour Arts Plaza by the Wellmont and will end at nearby Crane Park after a half-hour stroll through town. If you are unfamiliar with the experience of Unsilent Night I encourage you to visit and find out more!

What’s your idea of a perfect weekend day? Just once, I would love to wake up and feel like there is NOTHING I have to do!

What’s your favorite local restaurant? You may be surprised to learn that being an artist is not the most lucrative of career choices. Fortunately, I love to cook!

What’s on your nightstand? Even if I had a nightstand nothing on it would be of much use.  Once I hit the sheets, I’m gone.

What are you listening to? WFMU, all the time.  Obsessed with Dry Cleaning. The Oh-See’s, Sharon van Etten, Courtney Barnett, DakhaBrakha, Mountain. Yes, that Mountain.

What are your current indulgences? Sunny-D (hangs head in shame)

What talent you would most like to have? To dance well. Or more precisely, to not care that I dance like Elaine Benes.

What’s the worst-kept secret about Montclair? Have you been to the Sculpture Park at the corner of Hillside and Orange Rd? (full disclosure, I curate it!)

What do you hope they say about you at your funeral?

So often I’ll read an obituary for someone I know, or perhaps a stranger, and wish I’d known more about their life story while they were alive and perhaps appreciate them in a richer way. I’m hoping I leave something to talk about.
