Jersey-Bound Holland Tunnel Overnight Closures Begin February 5

Starting February 5, if you are leaving the city to return to New Jersey late at night, you won’t be going by way of the Holland Tunnel, except on Saturday nights.

Overnight closures of the New Jersey-bound Holland Tunnel will take place six nights a week. Closures are expected to go to 2025 and will enable crews to repair damage from Superstorm Sandy.

When Superstorm Sandy made landfall on October 29, 2012, it flooded the Holland Tunnel and its support facilities with an estimated 30 million gallons of water. Major elements damaged include the low voltage and medium voltage cables, fire detection and alarm systems, voice communication system and fiber optic cables, and pump room equipment and controls.

Work will include repairs and replacement of various systems and structural elements suffering from latent salt damage and installation of flood protection.

The weeknight closure schedule is as follows:

Sunday night 11:00 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.
Monday night 11:00 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.
Tuesday night 11:00 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.
Wednesday night 11:00 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.
Thursday night 11:00 p.m. – 5:30 a.m.
