Bright Star The Musical
June 7, 2019 @ 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm$25
4TH WALL THEATRE closes its 22nd season with the Broadway hit musical, Bright Star. The show will be presented June 7-16 at the Westminster Arts Center on the campus of Bloomfield College. The show is directed by 4th Wall Artistic Director Kate Swan, and Markus Grae-Hauck serves as the Musical Director. Bright Star was written and composed by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell. It is a continuation of Martin’s and Brickell’s Grammy-winning collaboration on the 2013 bluegrass album Love Has Come for You.
Bright Star was inspired by a real event and is a sweeping tale of love and redemption set against the rich backdrop of the American South, in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina in the 1920s and 1940s. It tells the story of literary editor Alice Murphy, who meets a young soldier just home from World War II. He awakens her longing to understand her past. Haunted by their unique connection, Alice sets out on a journey that transforms both of their lives.
Of the show, The New York Times declared, “Bright Star beams nostalgia…bringing a fresh breeze from the South to the spring theater season…The musical is gentle-spirited, not gaudy, and moves with an easygoing grace where others prance and strut.” Director Kate Swan sees the show as a way to focus on joy, hope, and the redemptive power of loving and supporting one another.
4th Wall has assembled a talented cast including Rebecca Monk of Woodland Park, Dan Malloy of Maplewood, Troy Hall of Montclair, Bob Russell and Ruth Kenote of Hackensack, Ted Cancila of Little Falls, Alyssa Marie Balderama of New Milford, Fran Leonardis of Ringwood, Jason Tamashausky and Karl Loveland of Metuchen, James Lopez of Lake Hiawatha, Rich Maloy and Jodi Freeman Maloy of Cedar Grove, Patrick McLaughlin of Hoboken, Laurice Grae-Hauck of West Orange, Debbie Zika of Hillsdale, and Rafaelle Danta, Kimberley Mesiti, Christine Orzepowski, and Sarah Levine McClelland of Bloomfield.
