The BrassWorks Gallery is pleased to welcome our dear friend and an intrical team member, Charlie Spademan and his exhibit, Design and Structure; The Artists Eye.
Charlie Spademan is an artist living in Montclair, NJ. His focus is primarily on ironwork, particularly on hand forging. He attended the Cleveland Institute of Art for four years from 1974 to 1978, then moved to New York and embedded himself in the East Village music and art scene of the late 70’s and 80’s. In 1995 he moved to Montclair and decided to focus on architectural ironwork. He has numerous commissioned works throughout New Jersey and New York.
Charlie explains: “The overwhelming majority of the objects I have made over my career have been commissioned works designed by me or have been collaborative efforts with other artists/designers. My commissioned designs fit the vision of my client without compromising my own aesthetic. I view myself first and foremost an artist, and regard all of these works as my artwork, as well as my sculpture and painting. I find 19th-century and early 20th-century riveted and bolted iron structures most beautiful. In my artwork, I often explore the transformation of structural steel into organic forms. I have long contemplated the undefined boundary between fine art, craft and design, and what exactly makes one an artist.”
BrassWorks is located at 105 Grove Street, Montclair, NJ. Originally constructed during the early twentieth century, 105 Grove Street was, for many years, home to the family-owned George Rutledge Etched Brass Works company. The property was converted into a unique professional office building in 2007 and provides space for a community art gallery. Upon learning the site’s heritage as home to a family-owned brass works company, the partners decided to transform the building while honoring its past, by naming it BrassWorks on Grove. The present building combines modern amenities with faithful restoration of the original 1930
architectural details.
The BrassWorks Gallery is open Monday through Friday
7:00 am – 7:00 pm. For inquiries contact Charlie Spademan; email charlie@ironfireart.com or call 973-891-0672 or follow on Instagram @CharlieSpademan.
