League of Women Voters Partners and Hikes to Reenergize and Grow Eagle Rock Conservancy, Post Covid

August 13 @ 9:00 am - 11:30 am

For Immediate Release

League of Women Voters Partners and Hikes to Reenergize and Grow Eagle Rock Conservancy, Post Covid

As the next event of its “We Love Eagle Rock Reservation” program, LWV.Eco and the Eagle Rock Conservancy invite the community to join us on Saturday, August 13, 2022 [9:00 am]  for a 4-to-5-mile hike, at a moderate pace, covering some two to three hours. We’ll learn about the history of the Reservation, its current challenges, and the way the Eagle Rock Conservancy and LWV.Eco are addressing those challenges.  Eagle Rock is an outstanding local resource; and its future as a place for exercise, relaxation, and an appreciation of the out-of-doors is a local asset to shared and prized.  While hiking we will also assess needs for removal of invasive plant-life, augmenting the development and growth of local vegetation, making the Reservation’s eco-structure more sound.

The League of Women Voters is well-known for its dedicated and effective efforts in the fields of voting rights, education and access. Through its Environmental Issues Committee [LWV.Eco], the League has been working to advocate for and improve environmental issues in our community.

Founded in 2004 and following the models of successful similar ventures benefitting local area parks [Brookdale, South Mountain Reservation and countless others], the Eagle Rock Conservancy is a watchdog for the conditions and vitality of Eagle Rock Reservation, a local gem most famous for its amazing view of the New York Skyline, but also the site for great hiking trails, nature observation, and “family time in the woods”. A visit to Eagle Rock  immediately transports hikers from a suburban/exurban mindset to a place to commune with Mother Nature.

As with so many other businesses and organizations., covid ransacked Eagle Rock Conservancy membership, as folks isolated, and moved activities into familiar spaces, avoiding unnecessary connections with possible sources of contagion.  From all-time highs pre-covid, Conservancy membership waned by a significant degree through and post covid.

Meet up on 8/13/2022 @ 9:00a.m. @ the 9/11 Memorial in Eagle Rock with our experienced trailsman, Ron Pate.  In 2002, Ron was named Tail Keeper of the Year in Essex County.  He was a founding member of the Eagle Rock Conservancy; is active in New Jersey Sierra Club; and serves on the Board of Directors of the Montclair Area League of Women Voters, and its LWV.Eco Environmental committee. He literally knows each and every corner of the Reservation – and is fully conversant on what the Reservation has to offer, and what it needs in order to remain a place we all can enjoy and be proud of.

There is no charge for the event.  We ask that if you wish to bring snacks and water, their packaging be environmentally conscious; and we recommend you wear good hiking footwear.  We hope for good weather; but in the event of rain (etc.) you can check the LWV website for status updates [https://www.lwvmontclairarea.org].  The rain date of the event will be Sunday 8/14/2022 @ 9:00am.

If you cannot join us the Eagle Rock Conservancy invites experienced master gardeners and trail maintainers to email Ron Pate at EagleRockConservancy@gmail.com to volunteer your skills to help improve the Park.
