The Gallery at Hillside Square is pleased to welcome Laurie Fusco, Judy Gould and Bobbie Polton and their show, PIeced together. This group exhibition is an exploration of each artist’s individual aesthetic and processes via the meduim of collage.
Laurie Gallup Fusco’s mixed media collages are an organic and spontaneous layering of her own inner landscape. Making art from things modest and subtle, the philosophy of Wabi-Sabi, encompasses much of the artist’s own ideas about what makes a piece of art meaningful and therefore beautiful. Manipulating paper, wood and many other found objects are her current mediums of expression. The perfection of imperfection that results from playing with, dying, coloring, and even deconstructing material is what excites her. Recycling or breathing new life into materials that already exist feeds her creative flow.
Judy Gould states; “My artwork on paper is driven by exploring color, line, shape, pattern, subject, and movement to experience and express juxtaposition, surprise, and beauty. In working with seemingly disparate images, my hope is to create works that touch, move and inspire wonder and discovery in others. I fell in love with printmaking, then began to find what else my original prints could say when combined with ripped or cut pieces of my prints and other papers as added elements. Drawing from a stash of my own prints and paper images, I find complimentary colors and imagery and play with possible elements on the print. I come to what feels right, harmonious, or surprising by eliminating excess elements, and reconfiguring the ones that remain. My process is intuitive more than intentional.”
Roberta Polton explains; “For many artists, collage is a layering of thoughts and ideas using paper, fabric, paint and glue. Through a process of exploration, my work has been redefined. Paper is no longer part of my vocabulary. Rusty objects, cracked cigarette lighters, wire, broken glass and mirrors, wood and cloth beyond recognition have become my elements. These objects lead me to train tracks, construction sites, Home Depot parking lots, and the streets of town on garbage day before the trucks start their rounds. I walk with my head down, early in the morning, as the night moves in, and barefoot during a torrential rain. I am searching for something most people have overlooked, discarded or forgotten. I study my finds slowly moving them from hand to hand, my fingers tracing over their edges. Each one speaks to me. They have a lost history. As I arrange these treasures, I will tell a new story and bring order out of chaos.
