How to Talk to Teens and Tweens About Sexuality
April 8, 2017 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm
optional donation
It can be difficult to accept that the kids in our lives are ready for ‘the talk.’ But we know that the more information young people have, the safer and healthier they are. This workshop will help adults clarify their values regarding sexuality and build communication skills. First, we will interview each other about the messages we received from our parents/caretakers when we were growing up and what we wish they had done differently. Then we will identify some values about sexuality that we want to communicate to the young people in our lives. After that, we will explore the concepts of shame-free communication and ‘sex positivity,’ and how they can improve our conversations and make young people safer. Next, we’ll delve into the details: how to be queer- and trans-inclusive, how to normalize young people’s bodies and desires, and how to counteract rape culture. Finally, we will explore the concept of “teachable moments” as more effective than “the talk.” We will do an activity in which we discuss potential teachable moments and how to utilize them effectively to communicate our values. We will end with Q+A.
