Gallery491 is thrilled to announce the opening of SO, WHAT’S GOING ON?: a solo exhibition of Austin Romanaux.
Born in New York and raised in New Jersey, Austin Romanaux was accepted into a small artist workshop in the fall of 2014 based upon a stack of drawings and sketch books he shared with Mona Brody, an artist and professor at Pratt Institute. It was Brody who observed his tendency towards broad strokes with his charcoal on paper and suggested he try painting on large canvas.
Austin has been painting since, primarily in acrylic, with his earlier works featuring his own sketches and prose. Three of those works hung at the Inspiring Minds exhibit at the South Orange Performing Arts Center in the summer of 2015. He was sixteen years old.
While Austin’s range is vast, his themes are varied. His instinct for color is consistently vibrant, and on large scale canvas there is almost always a sense of movement and distortion of depth.
Austin is currently a student at the School of Visual Arts. He paints and lives in Maplewood, New Jersey. This is his first solo exhibit, showcasing his 2017 Summer Project.
Built in 1923, Vault491 has housed numerous banks ranging from The Bank of Montclair to PNC. The town of Montclair is committed to maintaining its historic downtown while working to retain its thriving business district. The renovation of the building followed historic preservation guidelines and is seeking LEED certification. The conversion has preserved its wonderful character while simultaneously enhancing it to offer over 19,000 square feet of class-A professional office and retail space.
Gallery491 is open Monday through Friday 7:00 am – 7:00 pm.
