The movies are as follows: La Bamba (October 2) – Starring: Lou Diamond Phillips, Esai Morales, Rosana De Soto, Elizabeth Peña.The biographical story of Ritchie Valens and his rise from field laborer to a famous rock and roll singer who died tragically at age 17 in a plane crash with Buddy Holly…

Plea Bargaining & the Problem of Innocence

In this new lecture Tom Silver will explore the work of Japan’s most famous artist, Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849), in the context of his life and times. We will look at a broad range of Hokusai’s art - including drawings, prints and paintings. Immediately following the lecture Helen Silver will demonstrate how classical Japanese prints were made.

The intriguing art and culture of Japan has always fascinated the Western World, and in the mid-19th Century, a wave of “Japanomania” swept across Europe and America. This talk will tell the story of how some of our favorite artists—Whistler, the Impressionists, Van Gogh and the Post-Impressionists among them— incorporated these influences into their work. We will also learn how the inspiration of the Japanese aesthetic expanded beyond painting and printmaking into the decorative arts, interior design, furnishings, fabrics, and fashion.
