48 Hour Get Away: Mohonk Mountain House

Mohonk Mountain House

Sometimes it feels like my family spends half of our vacation time traveling to our destination, schlepping through airports and dragging along extended road trips all in the name of finding the perfect place to relax. Which may be why we never gave Mohonk Mountain House in New Paltz, NY, much thought – if it’s less than two hours away from this area, we reasoned, won’t we still feel like we’re home? But a recent autumn weekend of early leaf peeping and hiking showed us that vacation bliss really can be found just a short jaunt up the New York State Thruway.

Q: Is there an easy to reach beach destination where I catch can catch some September sun with the kids AND bring the dog? – Ken

A: Happily, the answer is YES. The Jersey Shore has gotten a lot pet friendlier this summer and there are two travel-worthy options in the southern beach towns that my family I uncovered this summer:

Get Ready to Get Wet: The Inside Scoop on Great Wolf Lodge

Great Wolf Lodge

A 60,000 sq foot indoor waterpark. Wolf ears. Pizza `round the clock. Two floors of buzzing, zapping, magic wand casting interactive games. An animatronic northern woods. Not to mention a kids salon, indoor mini golf and 10 pin bowling, and an arcade worthy of a pinball wizard.

This, my friends, is Great Wolf Lodge.

If you haven’t heard of it yet, your kids surely have – only 1 hour and 15 minutes away just across the Pennsylvania border in the Poconos, Great Wolf Lodge has been drawing families across Baristaville to it’s watery fun factory like wolves to pizza.

Both Georgette and I gave in to the wolf pack and brought our kids in the last few months. (I went with two boys, 10 and 11, and another mom; Georgette (the Editor in Chief of Barista Kids) went with her two girls, 7 and 10, and her husband.)

Grown-Up Getaway: Hiding Out at Hidden Pond

Hidden Pond

As a suburban Jersey girl with extended forays in city living, I’ve never had much experience with country life. However, I’ve always had romantic visions of rural weekend getaways; so with images of wildflowers, quiet trails, and true farm to table food floating in my head, I searched for a country retreat for my husband, Ken, and I for a “parents getaway” when our son was away one lovely, long summer weekend.

Hidden Pond was evidently made with us in a mind: a bit of agriculture gone glam in the beautiful Maine woods just outside of posh Kennebunkport (you know, of George and Barbara Bush fame). Building on the new trend of glamping (glamour camping where you enjoy the outdoors without lifting a finger), Hidden Pond is what I’m calling a “glodge,” a glamour lodge with a destination farm-to-fork restaurant, Earth.

Weekend Getaway: Philadelphia’s Fantastic Museum Mile

Philadelphia

Looking for an easy weekend getaway, but tired of the same old “drive” destinations near New Jersey? Consider following in my family’s footsteps, and get a fresh new take on an old destination. In our case, we hit up Philadelphia, but with a twist: We skipped our usual historic downtown tour and focused instead on the cultural side of the city. Can you spend a weekend in Philly without seeing the Liberty Bell and still have a good time? Yes! (But no need to skip the cheesesteaks….)

Family Travel: San Jose and Santa Cruz, California

 San Jose

Do you know the way to San Jose?? Woah woah woah…

I’m not going to lie, before my son Aidan (9) and I arrived in the Silicon Valley city of San Jose, that brain worm of a song was all I knew about the California’s 3rd largest city. But I’m happy to report that the city is sooo much more interesting than the song. It is, in fact, a great West Coast road trip destination for families, with a great mix of outdoor activities and cultural outposts, such as the Tech Museum, a favorite with my tech-savvy kid.

Planning on a West Coast visit any time soon? Here’s a handy pocket guide to the “innovation” city.

Day Trip: Storm King Art Center

BY  |  Wednesday, Aug 07, 2013 10:00am

Storm King Art Center

Colorful sculptures as tall as houses, a pop-art mermaid stretched across a lake, an electric orange streak stretching straight into the sky—Storm King Art Center is a bit like the Willy Wonka of art, over the top, sure, but ultimately sweet fun.

Set on 500 acres of rolling grounds just an hour north of Montclair, expansive Storm King feels like a cross between a park and a sculpture museum, with more than 100 mostly larger than life sculptures set among trees, hills, rocks and expansive stretches of green.

I'm struck by how much attention is being paid to the details of a parking lot, as opposed to the attention paid to the future impact of the monstrous projects being planned.
